LOWELL DANCE 2025
TIPPING POINT
‘Tipping Point’ was created to express our feelings in a world where we are increasingly isolated and powerless. While some pieces find hope in community, some hold space for discomfort and turbulence within. From the beginner dance classes to the Lowell Dance Company, we have worked diligently throughout the year to showcase a variety of dance styles and bring to light what we have to say about the important issues of our time.
UCSF Teen Wellness Summit on Mental Health
The Lowell Dance Company performed 'Tipping Point' at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Teen Wellness Summit on Mental Health in February of 2025, gaining knowledge, learning new skills, and reducing stigma around mental health. The Summit is a culmination of the Teen Wellness Connection, a program of The Science and Health Education Partnership (SEP) at UCSF, which works to support science teaching and learning throughout the San Francisco Unified School District.

“To me ‘Tipping Point’ means (following our theme, mental health) when all the stress that has built up (tests, homework, extracurriculars, etc), there needs to be a breaking point or that tipping point where we release all the stress“
“‘Tipping Point’ to me kind of sums up everything together. The stress, the overthinking, the tiredness, the overwork, the laziness and how everything piles up all together reaching up to a point where you can't keep it in anymore and break down.”
“There's so much going on right now (politically), we're on the precipice to a big change and we are addressing it through dance. It's the "tipping point" into a new world that we have the power to try and shape.”

Celebrating 25 years
This year's concert title, Tipping Point, came out of conversations with students about what it feels like to be right on the edge-of change, of pressure, of something personal or political. A tipping point can bring clarity, or it can push us toward the unknown. These dances reflect stories of challenges, joy, activism, and resilience-all expressed through movement.
Each piece was created collaboratively, with students leading the way-choosing music, shaping choreography, and building meaning together.
This year also marks my 25th year at Lowell. When I began, we had just two classes. In 2001, 1 founded the Lowell Dance Company as a space for students to connect, grow, and create. Since then, the program has grown into a four-tiered dance pathway, and next fall we'll launch our newest course-Dance Honors. We're also proud to now offer PE credit for sophomores enrolled in Dance 2, as long as they've completed Dance 1 as freshmen to fulfill their VAPA requirement.
Over the years, l've had the privilege of working with so many incredible students. Our alumni are doing amazing things-in the arts, education, and beyond —and many have returned to mentor our students and support the next generation of dancers. It's been one of my greatest joys to witness their journeys, and my goal is to continue sharing their stories and celebrating their impact.
I'm especially proud of Katrina Lau (Class of 2019), who served as my student teacher this year. Her choreography is featured in tonight's program, and her creativity, care, and leadership have been a gift to witness. We also celebrate Brenda Palaby (Class of 2011), another alumna, who is now directing the dance program at Lincoln High School.
Access to dance matters. As Cassandra Lee, our co-captain of the Lowell Dance Company, said at the Stand Up for Arts event in Sacramento, "Programs should not be made a privilege but should be made a standard across all schools." I hope our students continue to advocate, lead, and help make that vision a reality.
